Dark Drama

Inspired by Sam Shepard

“I was more lonely than I’ve ever been before.”

“Buried Child”, Sam Shepard

The seventh chapter of Stalker Chronicles was inspired by the dramatic works of Sam Shepard, particularly his plays “Buried Child,”  “The Curse of the Starving Class,” and Savage/Love.  Shepard’s style of drama is often characterized by the idea of  the death of the American dream. He combines wild humor, grotesque satire, myth, and a sparse, haunting language to create a subversive pop art vision of America. His characters are typically loners and drifters caught between a mythical past and the mechanized present.

Considered one of America’s most influential and celebrated playwrights of the 20th century, Sam Shepard is also an accomplished actor, director, screenwriter and musician. His childhood experience of living in a dysfunctional family with an alcoholic father would often provide the recurrent dark themes in his writing as well as a preoccupation with the myth of the vanishing West. His writing commonly incorporated inventive language, symbolism, and non-linear storytelling while being populated with drifters, fading rock stars and others living on the edge.

Before he was thirty Shepard had over thirty plays produced in New York. In his works Shepard has repeatedly examined the moral anomie and spiritual starvation that characterize the world of his drama.

Dreaming awake

imprisoned in agony

cast your eyes on me

before I disappear

we can be saved

incomplete while separate

and I, a fractured doll

lost in your parade
